Quality time

I was in the process of writing about how suddenly it had started to feel like winter i.e. I’d had to put the heating on a handful of times and wear an extra layer etc. when I realised that actually it’s still not THAT cold out there.
I’ve taken to wearing big coats, hats and scarves more for fashion purposes than to actually keep warm – plus the UK has been hit with storms in the last couple of days which are so windy and rainy that umbrellas actually become redundant so a coat with a hood or a woolly hat has become essential, even if the minute you step indoors you feel uncomfortably warm.

Despite all of this I wrapped up against the elements on Sunday and went for Sunday lunch at a lovely cosy country pub. I see my mum and dad regularly but now and again it’s nice to make some actual quality time to spend together and there’s no better excuse than plenty of comfort food and the odd glass of wine.

We visited The Pickering Arms in Thelwall, Cheshire for a 2 course Sunday lunch, which at £11.95 was fantastic value for a proper homemade roast, with real Yorkshire puddings. It’s a real rustic, country pub, recently refurbished but keeping its cosiness and warmth with wooden floors and beams and warm fire places.

We decided to walk to the next nearest pub (about 2 minutes away), called The Little Manor, for dessert. A beautiful pub – larger and more open feeling inside, but still feels like a country pub except more ‘done’ if you know what I mean.

The dogs weren’t interested in having their pictures taken but they were enjoying the beautiful floors – a mixture of solid wood, beautiful rugs and black and white chequered tiles.

We ordered coffee which was served in lovely blue and white printed crockery with homemade shortbread on the side, and an incredible sticky toffee pudding to share, which Monti was very keen to join in with.

We were talking and enjoying it a bit too much to get many pictures but if you’re based up north, particularly in the Cheshire or Lancashire regions and looking for somewhere dog friendly that serves good food either of these places are great. Just give them a call to book and make sure you mention you’re bringing your furry friends as they’ll sit you in their dog friendly areas.
